Greenville, SC – BLE provided critical geotechnical expertise for the Hollingsworth Trail Bridge project, a vital pedestrian link connecting the Belhaven Subdivision to Hollingsworth Trail in Greenville, SC. This bridge, primarily supported by timber pile foundations, spans across wetland areas and Laurel Creek, presented unique geotechnical challenges.
To ensure a safe and stable foundation, BLE conducted a comprehensive geotechnical exploration to assess subsurface soil and groundwater conditions at the site. This exploration included drilling three strategically located soil test borings. The borings revealed a complex soil profile consisting of fill and residual soils, along with detailed groundwater level information. This data proved crucial for informing subsequent structural design decisions.
BLE’s analysis of the site’s geology and subsurface conditions identified key considerations for the bridge’s construction. The presence of partially weathered rock at shallow depths in some boring locations indicated the potential need for pre-drilling to facilitate the installation of the timber piles. BLE provided detailed geotechnical recommendations for the design of the foundations and associated project elements, including specific guidance on timber pile installation in accordance with ASTM standards.
In addition, BLE identified areas where shallow spread footing foundations could be considered, offering potential cost savings and construction efficiencies.
