McDowell County, NC – BLE provided design and consultation services for the repair of Armstrong Creek Road following multiple slope failures caused by Hurricane Helene. In collaboration with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, BLE conducted a comprehensive site assessment and subsurface exploration, including soil borings and geotechnical testing, to evaluate damage and characterize soil and groundwater conditions. Based on these findings, BLE’s Project Engineer and Geostructures group designed a gabion basket wall with integrated drainage measures to stabilize the slope, restore the travel lane, and prevent future erosion. BLE was also retained to provide construction monitoring during the repair. The project successfully restored safe and reliable transportation access for employees supporting operations at the Armstrong State Fish Hatchery.
