Construction Materials Testing (CMT) with BLE

May 13, 2025

Let’s be frank: concrete is extremely important. After all, it’s everywhere! It’s in the ground we walk on, the support for our buildings, and even the frames of boats. Since concrete is so important, it’s equally vital to make sure it’s safe to be used for an intended project.

That’s where construction materials testing comes in. Construction materials testing (CMT) is the evaluation of various construction materials – such as concrete – for quality control prior to using it in a project or to determine if repair work needs to be performed. Depending on what the project needs, CMT can include:

  • Soil compaction testing
  • Retaining wall inspections
  • Pipe weld inspections
  • Roofing, masonry, or concrete testing

At BLE, we offer a variety of different CMT services, including concrete testing. But why do we need to test this seemingly indestructible material? To get answers, we met with one of BLE’s concrete professionals, Helen Kopscik.

Why is Concrete Material Testing Important?

We found Helen Kopscik, EIT, in our CMT office, celebrating her one-year anniversary with BLE. She gave me a chicken biscuit; I like her already! But aside from having tasty snacks on hand, Helen also provided the following information about concrete and was able to simplify the reasons for and processes used during concrete materials testing.

What is Concrete?

For the most part, concrete consists of cement (glue) and aggregate (sand, stones, etc.) mixed in equal parts with water and then poured or spread into a form like a big mudpie. Simply put, we test concrete to evaluate the makeup and properties to confirm it’s up to the task. Apparently, there are many different types of concrete, and each one has a specific use, composition, and standard to which it must be formed.

Why is Concrete Testing Important?

You see, concrete may seem indestructible, but like any material, it has its limits – and that’s where testing comes in. Construction or concrete materials testing helps verify that the concrete will perform its intended purpose, whether it supports a bridge or lines your swimming pool.

Each test offers valuable insight into how the material will behave under pressure, stand up to the elements, or maintain its integrity over time. Without thorough testing, the durability and safety of a structure could be compromised, and no one wants to leave that to chance.

How BLE Conducts Material Testing for Concrete

Now that we know why it’s imperative to test concrete when it’s used for buildings, roads, and more, let’s take a look at how we offer that service to our clients.

BLE tests concrete to determine if its composition is correct by conducting field analysis during pouring (or prior to placement) for temperature (degrees Fahrenheit), slump (inches fallen out of cone shape), and air content (percent volume). When we conduct material testing for concrete, we always do so with the material’s intended use in mind.

In the lab, there are several tests we can perform, such as estimated longevity and flexural strength. However, most of our testing is to determine compressive strength (how much weight the concrete will hold) by running site-formed cylinders or other shapes through the crusher.

Hold on, Helen! We have a concrete crusher? How is it that I’ve been here for nearly a year and haven’t seen the excitement of exploding concrete cylinders? I think I hear our next blog calling!
